What may be a contemporary cultural for dealing with complex emotions by funneling them through the seemingly mild vocabulary of our communal aesthetic language. We wash our emotions (like money laundering) through aesthetic judgments like cuteness, masking our messy, unpredictable emotions with clean, unnoticed words. (Sianne Ngai)
